2026 Nobel Medicine Prize Awarded for Optogenetics Breakthrough

The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel for their groundbreaking discoveries involving light-gated ion channels and the development of optogenetics.

Their research helped scientists understand how light-sensitive proteins, known as channelrhodopsins, can be used to control the activity of nerve cells. The breakthrough provided researchers with a powerful way to study the brain with unprecedented precision.

Optogenetics allows scientists to activate or inhibit specific neurons using light. The technique has transformed neuroscience research and helped scientists investigate complex processes involving movement, memory, emotions and behaviour.

The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet announced the award on October 5, 2026. The three laureates will share the Nobel prize, with their work also being studied for potential future applications in neurological and sensory disorders.
