Chandrababu Naidu Welcomes Tamil Nadu CM Vijay for Krishna Water Talks

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu welcomed Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay during his visit to Vijayawada on October 13, 2026. The two leaders met to discuss water-related issues affecting their states, with the supply of Krishna River water to Chennai among the key subjects on the agenda. The meeting highlighted the importance of cooperation between the neighbouring states on water management and regional development.

A major focus of the discussions was the release of Krishna River water to Chennai through the Telugu Ganga project. The project was developed to help meet Chennai's drinking-water requirements by transporting water from the Krishna River basin. Tamil Nadu has been seeking the release of its allocated water, making the issue a significant concern for the state government, particularly amid growing demand for reliable water supplies.

The leaders also discussed the proposed Godavari–Krishna–Cauvery river-linking initiative, which aims to improve water distribution across parts of southern India. Such proposals involve transferring water between river basins and require coordination among states, along with assessments of water availability, infrastructure requirements and environmental considerations.

Discussions between Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu could help identify areas for further cooperation, although any project decisions would depend on detailed planning and official approvals.

The meeting comes as water management remains an important issue for several southern Indian states, where urban demand and seasonal variations affect water availability. For Chennai, Krishna River water is an important supplementary source of drinking water, while Andhra Pradesh plays a key role in the existing supply arrangements. The outcome of the meeting will depend on official announcements regarding water releases and future cooperation on river-linking proposals.
