CM Vijay Launches ₹3,108 Crore Chennai Water Supply Project

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay laid the foundation stone for a ₹3,108.55 crore drinking water infrastructure project in Chennai on October 14, 2026. The ceremony took place in Sholinganallur, marking a major step towards strengthening the city’s water distribution network. Following the event, Vijay greeted members of the public, as the project drew attention for its potential to improve water supply across Chennai.
The project, known as the Chennai Ring Main System, aims to connect nine drinking water sources through an approximately 98-kilometre pipeline network. These sources include the Poondi, Puzhal, Cholavaram and Chembarambakkam reservoirs, along with desalination plants that supply drinking water to the city. The interconnected network is designed to strengthen the movement of water between different supply areas.
The main objective is to address a limitation in Chennai’s existing water distribution system. At present, different water sources largely supply designated areas through separate pipelines, making it difficult to redirect surplus water when another area faces a shortage. The new ring network is intended to provide greater flexibility by allowing water to be transferred between supply zones according to demand.
The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board will implement the project, which is expected to strengthen the city’s drinking water infrastructure. The system is designed to connect major reservoirs and desalination facilities, helping authorities manage fluctuations in water availability. The estimated project cost of ₹3,108.55 crore includes implementation and long-term operation and maintenance provisions.
The project is expected to take several years to complete, with an earlier report indicating a four-year implementation period. Once operational, the interconnected pipeline network is intended to improve the reliability of Chennai’s drinking water distribution, particularly when individual sources experience shortages. The foundation stone ceremony marks the beginning of the project’s implementation phase, with its eventual impact depending on the completion of the planned infrastructure.
