Elon Musk Questions Ambani Over Starlink Delay in India

Elon Musk has sparked a political and business controversy in India over the delayed launch of Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet service. On October 7 and 8, 2026, Musk questioned why the company had not yet begun commercial operations despite years of regulatory engagement. He alleged that powerful business interests were attempting to protect their dominance in the Indian market.

Musk later directly questioned industrialist Mukesh Ambani’s influence, asking on X, “Is Ambani the real boss of India?” His comments triggered debate about competition in India’s telecommunications sector, where Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and satellite internet providers are competing for opportunities in the growing connectivity market. However, Musk has not publicly established that Ambani or Reliance intervened to block Starlink’s entry.

Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi responded to Musk’s post by writing, “Welcome to India, Elon. Wait till you discover the other guy.” The remark was widely interpreted by media outlets as an apparent reference to industrialist Gautam Adani, although Gandhi did not name him in the post.

Musk subsequently replied, “Thank you, Rahul. This is indeed troubling,” bringing further attention to the controversy.

The Indian government rejected allegations of discriminatory treatment, maintaining that its satellite communication approval framework is fair and non-discriminatory. Starlink has received a Global Mobile Personal Communications by Satellite licence, but additional regulatory requirements, including security assessments and spectrum-related procedures, have remained important steps before commercial operations can begin.

Authorities have also indicated that other satellite communication licence holders are undergoing regulatory assessments.

The controversy has raised questions about competition, regulatory transparency and the future of satellite internet in India. Starlink could expand connectivity options in remote and underserved areas, although its eventual affordability will depend on pricing and equipment costs. For now, Musk’s allegations remain unproven, while the government maintains that regulatory and security requirements must be completed before the service can launch commercially.
