Indian Pilot Hailed After Flydubai Flight Attack

Flydubai Flight FZ1073 was flying from Dubai to Tel Aviv on September 30, 2026, carrying 174 people, when a violent incident unfolded inside the cockpit. According to officials and multiple reports, Indian Captain Smit Machchhar was attacked and stabbed by his co-pilot, an Omani national. The aircraft then entered a steep descent, plunging nearly 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds.
Despite suffering serious injuries, Captain Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew members to enter. Several passengers confronted and restrained the attacker, while other pilots and crew members helped regain control of the aircraft. The plane was eventually stabilised and diverted to Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz Airport in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely.
The passengers remained in Saudi Arabia before being flown to Israel on a replacement Flydubai aircraft. Captain Machchhar was taken to a hospital in Tabuk and underwent emergency surgery. Indian officials later said he was in stable condition. The incident is being investigated, while authorities continue to examine the co-pilot's motive and whether the attack was part of a wider plot.
The dramatic incident has drawn international attention, with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly praising Captain Machchhar's actions. Modi said the pilot's courage helped prevent a major tragedy, while Netanyahu credited him, passengers and crew with saving the lives of those aboard. Flydubai has suspended its Israel flights while investigations continue.
