Trump Confuses India With Brazil in Presidential Election Post

US President Donald Trump sparked confusion after appearing to mistakenly refer to Brazil’s presidential election as India’s in a post on Truth Social. Trump claimed that around 125 million people had voted in the first round of India’s “Presidential Election,” even though India does not hold a direct nationwide presidential vote.

The figures in Trump’s post corresponded to Brazil’s presidential election, where millions of voters went to the polls in the first round. Brazil’s election has moved toward a runoff after the leading candidates failed to secure enough votes to win outright.

Trump used the election comparison while criticizing the US voting and vote-counting process. He questioned why election results in some parts of the United States can take longer to finalize, contrasting that with the speed at which he said results were announced elsewhere.

India’s President is not elected through a direct popular vote. The President is chosen by an Electoral College comprising elected members of Parliament and state legislative assemblies. Trump’s apparent India-Brazil mix-up quickly drew attention online, turning the post into an unusual international political gaffe.
